Next-Gen SSD: Micron Unveils Ultra-Fast PCIe 6.0 Drive
13:54, 27.05.2025
At Computex 2025, Micron impressed the audience by showcasing an SSD with a speed of 30.25 GB/s. That’s twice as fast as current PCIe 5.0 models. The new device was spotted by Tom’s Hardware at the Astera Labs booth — a company developing switches for PCIe 6.0. The Micron 9650 Pro helped demonstrate next-gen high-speed connections that allow devices to communicate directly with each other, bypassing the CPU.
Not Ready for Sale Yet
It's important to note that the Micron 9650 Pro is not a finished product. It's an engineering sample in the EVT3 stage — it has gone through several tuning phases but still needs extensive testing. In the photos, the SSD appears in a large metal enclosure, connected via a special PCIe 6.0 expansion board — far from the familiar M.2 format.
Currently, no commercial processor officially supports PCIe 6.0, and certification for such devices isn’t expected until the end of 2025. The ecosystem isn't ready yet, so don’t expect a commercial release anytime soon. However, the technology is clearly on the horizon — at DesignCon, Micron and Astera Labs already demonstrated real-world speeds of 27 GB/s.
This new level of performance is no longer a dream — it’s only a matter of time.
