It was recently revealed that Nvidia has developed technology to track the location of its AI accelerators. The company plans to use this technology to stop the smuggling of chips to countries where their export is prohibited.
New software feature from Nvidia
The new feature has already been tested but has not yet been officially released. Customers will be able to install this software option on their accelerators. Insider information has revealed that the feature will use the confidential computing capabilities of processors. The software was created to allow customers to control computing performance and will also use the delay between servers to determine location.
The new software agent will use GPU telemetry to track integrity, monitor status, and locate the device. The feature is planned to be available for new Blackwell chips.
In this way, Nvidia has responded to calls from the White House and taken steps to track and potentially prevent the smuggling of chips into regions where their sale is prohibited.
In May, a bill was introduced that requires geolocation technology in powerful AI devices. This includes high-end graphics cards, AI processors, and servers.
