OpenAI Turns to Google’s AI Chips in a Surprising Shift of Strategy
14:14, 28.10.2026
OpenAI could be on the verge of purchasing AI chips from Google, according to Reuters citing The Information. Such a deal would help the two competing firms in AI products and searches establish a closer business relationship.
Both firms have already initiated cooperation in new areas. This past week, for instance, OpenAI declared plans to integrate its most sophisticated AI models through Google Cloud services. Nevertheless, the purchase of such chips remains unconfirmed by both parties, and the terms of the deal remain undisclosed.
OpenAI already relies heavily on Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) to train and run its AI models. Now, Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) could offer another option. Google designed these chips specifically for demanding computing tasks and has started selling them directly to selected customers.
Why Google’s Chips Could Change the AI Race
It is an example of the mounting pressure that technology companies are facing. Artificial intelligence firms need vast amounts of computing capacity, and securing adequate hardware has now become a necessity for their expansion.
Companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, through its parent company Alphabet, plan to invest up to $600 billion in AI infrastructure by 2026. But the investors have now become impatient to see returns on these huge investments.
Google has already attracted customers for its TPUs, including Anthropic, one of OpenAI’s competitors. Meanwhile, OpenAI is developing its own AI chip with Broadcom and plans to deploy it by the end of 2026.
Our Take
We believe this shift could make AI infrastructure more competitive and reduce dependence on a single chip supplier. For you, that could mean more capable AI tools, better performance, and potentially lower costs. But sure, these benefits will depend on how efficiently companies turn their hardware investments into useful products.
