OpenAI may be moving deeper into hardware. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company is working with MediaTek and Qualcomm on a mobile chip designed for future AI smartphones. Mass production could begin in 2028.

This chip will not simply chase raw speed. OpenAI seems focused on power efficiency, memory control, and the ability to run small AI models directly on the device. You would get faster local responses for simple tasks, while heavier requests would still go to cloud AI systems.

Why This Chip May Feel Different

The most interesting part is context. Kuo says the future phone may continuously understand what you are doing, where you are, and what you may need next. That sounds ambitious, but Qualcomm already has similar technology through its Sensing Hub.

OpenAI’s advantage could come from tighter control over its own models. If the phone mainly runs OpenAI language models, the chip can be built around those exact needs. That may reduce wasted power and improve everyday AI features.

Luxshare may become the exclusive partner for device design and production. Meanwhile, OpenAI is also developing data center AI chips with Broadcom, which shows a broader plan to depend less on Nvidia.
