The BSD Router Project 2.0 distribution has been released under the slogan “No need to buy a router: download it!”.

BSDRP is designed for compact software routers and supports protocols such as BGP, RIP, PIM, and OSPF. It is controlled via the command line through the CLI interface. This distribution is available for ARM64 and x86_64 architectures. The project has also updated its code base to the FreeBSD 16 branch.

Distribution features

  • The package includes two packages with routing protocol implementations: BIRD and FRRouting.
  • SNMP can be used for management and monitoring tasks.
  • The project is adapted for the parallel use of separate routing tables.
  • ng_netflow is available for collecting traffic statistics, and netreceive, iperf, NetPIPE, netsend, and netblast utilities are available for performance evaluation.
  • Export of traffic information in Netflow streams.
  • Ability to create fault-tolerant routers from 2 servers, so that in normal mode, the load will be evenly distributed across 2 servers, and in case of failure, the load can be taken over by the functioning router. Implementation is done using CARP and VRRP protocols.
  • Bandwidth limitation with ng_car and IPFW + dummynet.
  • Monit package for monitoring.
  • For Ethernet, there is support for network bridges, link aggregation, and VLAN operation.
  • Installation of additional programs with the pkgng manager.
  • Support for OpenVPN, IPSec, GRE, Wireguard, and GIF.
  • Ssmpt is used as the mail delivery agent, and dnsmasq is used as the DHCP server.
  • To simplify administrative tasks, the tmux utility is available, with support for management via serial port, SSH, and local console.
  • System updates are based on two partitions on the Flash drive: the second partition receives the new version of the bootloader and becomes active after rebooting. If installation problems are detected, you can roll back to the previous system state.
