OpenAI is preparing to launch one of its most ambitious projects yet in Asia with the construction of a massive data center in India. The facility is expected to reach a capacity of at least one gigawatt, placing it among the largest of its kind. According to Bloomberg, the company has already established a legal entity in the country and intends to open an office in New Delhi before the end of 2025. The final location and construction timeline remain under wraps, but speculation suggests an official reveal during CEO Sam Altman’s upcoming visit to India this September.
Part of the Stargate Vision
The Indian complex will form a key pillar of OpenAI’s sweeping global initiative known as Stargate. This program carries a projected budget of up to 500 billion dollars and aims to create an interconnected backbone of advanced data centers. Work is already underway in the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Norway, with India set to take center stage in the Asian market.
Why India Matters
India has rapidly become one of ChatGPT’s strongest markets, ranking second worldwide in terms of user base. By building infrastructure locally, OpenAI expects to cut latency, improve data security, and offer smoother access to its AI services. The financial scale is equally striking. Nvidia’s CEO has estimated that a one-gigawatt facility could demand investments approaching 50 billion dollars. For OpenAI, the move underscores both a long-term commitment to India and a bold step in shaping the future architecture of artificial intelligence.
