The new PCIe 8.0 specification will boost graphics card performance
13:11, 08.05.2026
The release of the PCIe 8.0 specification was recently announced and is scheduled for 2028. The development process is primarily focused on backward compatibility, improving bandwidth, and minimizing power consumption.
PCIe 8.0 Specifications
Data transfer speeds in PCIe 8.0 will be twice as fast as those in PCIe 7.0. Total bandwidth will be around 1 TB/s when using a 16-lane configuration. The new standard will support the needs of high-performance computing, AI, and high-speed networks.
PCIe Gen8 NVMe solid-state drives will have sequential data transfer speeds of up to 120,000 MB/s. There are also plans to adopt new connector technologies as data transfer speeds continue to increase.
The copper conductor layer has already nearly reached the limits of its capabilities. For example, obvious problems have already emerged due to crosstalk in PCIe 5.0 and 6.0. PCIe 8.0, based on copper contacts with a speed of 256 Gb/s, may face significant challenges. Thus, a standard edge connector will not be able to guarantee an intact signal without delays and significant power consumption. Therefore, there are plans to design PCIe slots using other materials.
Given that servers are only just preparing for PCIe 6.0, the use of devices based on the new standard is not expected in the near future.
