TSMC is accelerating the adoption of advanced process technologies. Mass production of 1.4nm microchips will begin in the second half of 2027, which is 12 months ahead of the original schedule.

The production will take place at the science park in Taichung, which will house a manufacturing complex consisting of four new fabs. Experts estimate that these four facilities combined will generate at least $16 billion in annual revenue.

Taichung Construction Details

Construction in Taichung is already well underway.

The first facility will be completed by April 2027, with the second scheduled for completion by October of the same year. The third and fourth facilities are currently in the permitting and approval stages, with commissioning slated for the second and fourth quarters of 2028, respectively.

Why Taiwan Is Leading Right Now

TSMC benefits from a dense network of partners and suppliers located directly within the Taichung science park. Thanks to this well-developed local infrastructure, the company can reduce service costs and roll out new process nodes significantly faster.

Ahead-of-schedule progress gives TSMC a competitive advantage. While TSMC aims to begin mass production of 1.4nm chips in 2027, Intel plans to roll out similar technology in 2028, and Samsung is eyeing a 2029 release.

So, from the current state of affairs, the Taiwanese chipmaker is in a leading position in the global semiconductor market.
