Anthropic Puts Claude to Work on Chip Design, Spooking the Market
18:53, 04.11.2026
Anthropic has established an engineering team that uses AI to design semiconductors. The team currently consists of 15 specialists.
The emergence of similar AI-powered solutions poses a potential threat to specialized companies that provide chip design software, such as Synopsys and Cadence. As a result, shares in both companies have fallen amid concerns about new competitors entering the market.
Why Is Anthropic Using Claude?
The team uses Claude models to accelerate the design of its own processors and optimize engineering workflows. AI agents could significantly shorten development timelines compared to traditional methods used by companies such as Nvidia and AMD.
Anthropic is not the first company to adopt AI for this purpose. OpenAI previously worked with Broadcom and incorporated internal AI tools into the development of its Jalapeño accelerator. These tools helped complete the chip design process in just nine months.
New Approaches Mean More Competition for Established Players
Following the news about Anthropic's initiative, Synopsys shares fell by 2.5%, while Cadence shares dropped by 4.5%. Investors fear that developers of large-scale AI models, such as Anthropic, could eventually displace traditional providers of electronic design automation (EDA) software. And this market segment generates approximately $16 billion in revenue.
Anthropic has not announced any plans to bring these tools to market. However, it has approached EDA software developers seeking access to proprietary datasets to improve its Claude models. Those companies may refuse to share their data, potentially limiting the widespread adoption of AI-powered design solutions.
In-House Chips Could Strain Relationships with Partners
Developing proprietary processors could intensify competition with companies on which Anthropic currently depends, including Amazon, Alphabet, Nvidia, and AMD. At the same time, AI could significantly speed up chip design processes.
It remains unclear which direction these developments will take.
