On July 14, users around the world experienced internet access disruptions due to a global outage of the public DNS resolver 1.1.1.1 provided by Cloudflare. The problem also affected the Gateway plain text DNS service, but authoritative DNS servers and encrypted traffic remained operational.
Cloudflare Recommended Temporarily Changing DNS Providers
During the outage, Cloudflare recommended that users switch to alternative DNS providers, such as Google DNS or OpenDNS, to ensure stable Internet operation. Reports of malfunctions flooded the Downdetector portal.
Service Restored, but Cause Undisclosed
About an hour after the incident began, Cloudflare engineers managed to fully restore 1.1.1.1 to working order. The company did not disclose the cause of the outage, merely confirming that the situation had been resolved and did not affect the main DNS services, Gateway DNS, and Authoritative DNS.
