Coursera recently announced plans to acquire Udemy, creating a single company with an estimated value of $2.5 billion. The deal could significantly strengthen the position of the united online platforms in the field of AI and software development.
Evaluation of the future deal
Udemy shareholders will receive 0.8 Coursera shares for each Udemy share they own. Based on the terms of the agreement, Udemy is valued at approximately $930 million. After the future deal was announced, the shares of both companies immediately rose, with Udemy increasing by 28% and Coursera by 8%.
The companies plan to scale up their number of students, especially corporate clients who are focused on retraining employees in the field of AI. Coursera has partnerships with several universities, while Udemy offers access to a wide range of courses from independent experts.
The merger of the two companies will enable them to offer new users not only practical courses on specific skills, but also academically accredited programs. In addition, a significant reduction in operating costs is expected.
The deal is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026 after final shareholder approval. Thus, educational platforms are seeking to expand their influence amid significant demand for skills in digital transformation and artificial intelligence.
