Europe Bets €319 Million on a New Era of GaN Chip Manufacturing
11:11, 30.10.2026
Europe is taking a major step towards strengthening its semiconductor industry. The European Commission has approved €319 million in state aid for Infineon Technologies to launch the world’s first mass production of gallium nitride (GaN) power chips on 300 mm wafers.
The German semiconductor manufacturer will upgrade its existing facility in Villach, Austria. The entire project, called Empowering Fab, represents an investment of approximately €1.1 billion. Infineon expects its first products from the upgraded production line to reach the market by the end of 2027. The investment programme will continue until 2034.
Why 300 mm Wafers Could Change Chip Production
The move from 200 mm to 300 mm wafers brings a significant manufacturing advantage. Each larger wafer can accommodate approximately 2.3 times more chips. This could lower production costs and help Infineon use its manufacturing equipment more efficiently.
GaN technology also offers practical benefits over traditional silicon. These chips switch faster, waste less energy and generate less heat. As a result, manufacturers can build smaller and more efficient power systems.
You may encounter this technology in more places than you expect. AI data centres, electric vehicles, robotics, fast chargers and renewable energy systems could all benefit from more efficient GaN components.
What This Investment Means for the Future
The European Commission expects this project to strengthen the region’s semiconductor independence and reduce its reliance on overseas suppliers. Infineon also sees growing demand ahead. According to Yole Group estimates cited by the company, the global power GaN market could reach $3.5 billion by 2031.
This investment could influence your everyday technology more than you might think. More efficient chips could eventually mean faster charging, cooler electronics and lower energy consumption in AI infrastructure. Europe is not simply investing in another factory. It is positioning itself to compete in the next generation of power electronics.
