Micron Technology has introduced a line of the first memory modules in the LPCAMM2 form factor, which stands for “low-power compression attached memory module”. The advantages of the new line are the ability to use high-speed chips and compactness.

LPCAMM2 reportedly consumes up to 58% (up to 80% in waiting mode) less power than DDR5. This was realized through a power management and voltage regulation chip.

LPCAMM2-based laptops can become thinner and cheaper because of the 128-bit memory interface. Only one such module is needed to power a laptop.

In terms of compactness, LPCAMM2 can save more than 60% of the space, which is what Micron found in comparison to two DDR5 SODIMMs. The space-saving format was achieved due to the vertical arrangement of LPDDR5X memory chips. Micron noted that LPCAMM2 can be used in conjunction with DDR5, but no additional power was found in the joint use.

LPCAMM2 modules are suitable for personal computers and laptops and will be available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities. It is noted that LPDDR5X memory may have a slightly slower speed than DDR5 SODIMMs, but the former compensates for this with a data transfer rate of up to 9600 MT/s (compared to 6400 MT/s for DDR5).

In its press release, Micron did not specify the release date for the new modules. In turn, experts say that such capacity won’t appear until 2026, but the company's partners already have samples for testing. It is assumed that Lenovo will be one of the first companies to use LPCAMM2 in the production of devices.
