On May 27 of this year, the release of AlmaLinux 10.0 took place. The release is characterized by performance improvements, updates in certain tools, and patches for ppc64le, x86_64, s390x, and ARM64 architectures. There are also plans to release builds with Xfce, KDE, GNOME, and other images soon.

AlmaLinux was released in response to the discontinuation of support for CentOS 8. The project operates under the control of the AlmaLinux OS Foundation, and this organization was created for development on a neutral site with active community participation. The distribution is freely available to anyone who wants to download it.

AlmaLinux 10.0 is compatible with RHEL and can be used as a replacement for RHEL 10.0 and CentOS 10 Stream. AlmaLinux features support for Compaq, HP NetRAID-4M, LSI SAS 10xx/2xxx, Emulex BladeEngine 2/3, Adaptec Catch All, QLogic ISP, and others.

Changes in AlmaLinux 10.0

Compared to RHEL 10, AlmaLinux 10.0 has several major changes:

  • Added builds for x86-64 (x86-64-v2) and x86-64 base builds for x86-64-v3 optimization. There is also additional support for x86-64-v2. Availability of x86-64-v2 build regular repositories and preparation for packages from EPEL;
  • Use of the processor register %rbp, which contains function variables and the return address. In this way, it is possible to use additional system profiling and tracing in the distribution.
  • Added the ability to use KVM on some systems.
  • Added support for more than 150 hardware devices.
  • Possibility to boot in UEFI Secure Boot mode for some systems.
  • SPICE protocol implementation for remote work with desktop under QEMU/KVM control.
