The RISC-V architecture will have official support for NVIDIA graphics processors. The main focus may be on AI.
RISC-V Summit in China
At the recent RISC-V Summit, a representative from NVIDIA announced that the company's GPUs will be compatible with processors based on the RISC-V architecture.
Frans Sijstermans showed the standard configuration of the new system. It became clear from his presentation that the RISC-V processor will ensure the functioning of the OS, applications, and drivers, while the GPU will be responsible for parallel computing. This approach is likely focused on AI functionality.
In addition, a new computational unit was presented – DPU, which will process network connections. This type of computational unit can significantly reduce the load on the CPU.
The main reason for adapting NVIDIA CUDA to RISC-V is sanctions. There are restrictions on the range of graphics accelerators on the Chinese market, so this approach can compensate for certain losses.
If this concept is freely applied, there is a high probability that the new approach could become a good alternative for data centers and AI-oriented systems.
